OHES Policies and Procedures
Attendance
State Law requires parents to send students ages 6 – 18 to school regularly and on time, to compel the student to attend regularly, and to provide an explanation satisfactory to school personnel for all absences/tardies. Parents and/or guardians who fail to meet these obligations may be guilty of an infraction and subject to prosecution (E.C. 48070).
Reporting an Absence:
We ask parents/guardians to call the Attendance Line at 818.597.4227 every morning when their student is going to be absent from school. This is to help insure that we verify each student’s safe arrival and school and that we accurately record each student’s daily attendance. Please be ready to provide the following information:
-
Name of caller and relationship with student
-
Student name
-
Teacher name
-
Reason for absence
Excessive Absences:
Our district attendance system counts the number of days that students miss school, whether excused or unexcused. Excused absences include illness or injury to the child, quarantine of the home by county health officials, a medical/dental appointment that can only be scheduled during school hours or attendance at funeral services for immediate family. Absences for religious holidays will be granted upon written request from parents/guardian.
Excused Tardy:
If your student is going to be late for school due to an appointment or other valid reason, please call the attendance line at 818.597.4227 and let us know when the student will arrive, the reason for late arrival and if the student will be requiring a hot lunch for the day. Excused tardies would be any medical, dental, optometric or chiropractic appointments, or infrequent family emergencies or transportation issues.
Anyone who arrives late with an unexcused tardy will replace their missed class time with their first recess. Please note this is for unexcused tardies only.
Excessive Tardies:
- Kindergarten and Discovery Kindergarten students are considered tardy after the 8:15 AM bell.
- 1st - 5th grade students are considered tardy after the 8:20 AM bell.
- Students who arrive after that must report to the office for a late pass.
- On the fifth tardy, a letter will be sent home reminding parents that students are required to be on time for school.
- On the tenth tardy, parents/guardians will be required to have a conference with the Principal.
- On the fifteenth tardy, parents/guardians will be referred to the Ventura County School Review Board (SARB) which in turn may refer the case to the Superior Court for prosecution.
Dress Code
The district expects students to attend school wearing neat and clean clothing and be appropriate for all school activities. In no case should the dress or appearance of a student endanger the health and safety of the student or others. Clothing may not be of a nature to have “disruptive effect upon the orderly operation of the school.” (State of California Administrative Code, Section 5, Section 30200).
- Students must wear clothing that includes both a shirt with pants or skirt, or the equivalent (for example dresses, shorts, or leggings) and shoes appropriate for physical movement and physical education classes.
- No flip flops, open toe, open heel, or heeled shoes over one inch. Comfortable and flexible street shoes or tennis shoes are suggested.
- Clothing must cover the chest, back, buttocks, and torso.
- Clothing must opaquely cover private parts and any undergarments at all times (see-through clothing, mesh, or transparent materials do not meet this requirement).
- Tops or shirts must have the minimum of a strap over each shoulder that keeps the top in place to meet the above requirements.
- Clothing may not depict, advertise or advocate the use of firearms, alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or other controlled substances.
- Clothing may not use or depict hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation or any other protected classification.
- Students may not wear clothing and accessories that feature offensive images or language, including profanity, pornography, vulgarities, or defamatory language as determined by the school principal or their administrative designee.
- Students are encouraged to wear hats and visors outdoors to provide sun protection. Hats or visors may not be worn indoors, with the exception of religious, ethnic, or culturally specific head coverings.
- No Hats In Class!
- Hair should be clean and well kept. Outrageous hairstyles and hair color are not permitted. Boys are encouraged not to wear “pony tails” or “rat tails”.
- Dangling earrings or elaborate jewelry are not permitted due to safety concerns during physical activity and play.
- Students may not wear any type of tattoo, including temporary rub on types.
Parents can help students use good judgment in choosing what to wear to school.
In the case that a student is unable to abide by the dress code policy, school provided garments may be loaned to the student until the parent or guardian is able to provide appropriate clothing.

Field Trip & Driving Policy
While we truly appreciate our parent drivers for school field trips and activities, we have had some recent field trips where district policies have not been followed. These policies have been established for the safety of all of our students and parents while on school business, and it is imperative that they be followed.
-
If driving, the driver’s car must be in excellent mechanical condition and a seat belt must be available for each student assigned to the vehicle. Students are not permitted to sit in the front seat.
-
The car must have enough gasoline to complete the trip without making a stop for gas.
-
Adults who attend filed trips should plan to supervise students at all times.
-
100% of attention should be devoted to driving and supervising of students, so cell phone use should be avoided unless for an emergency.
-
Siblings may not attend field trips.
-
When driving on a field trip all vehicles must go directly to the destination and return directly to the school on the return trip. IT IS NOT PERMITTED TO STOP FOR FOOD, DRINKS OR VARY FROM THE PRESCRIBED ROUTE.
-
If you choose to show a movie in your vehicle during the drive, it must be “G” rated.
Homework Policy
The purpose of homework at Oak Hills is to enrich each child’s learning experience by providing an appropriate quantity and quality of homework for each child at each grade level. Homework is meant to be a positive learning experience for each child with the intention of reinforcing the concepts taught in the classroom as well as teaching responsibility and the importance of completing tasks.
One of the most important aspects of a primary education is developing good reading skills. For this reason, each child is expected to read to or be read to for a minimum of thirty minutes each day. This time is intended to be an enjoyable part of the child’s (and hopefully family’s) day.
The purpose of projects is for the child to have the opportunity to exemplify their knowledge of a given substantive area or concept in a variety of medium and modes. Age and grade level appropriate projects may be assigned at each grade level with the expectation that students have the knowledge and are capable of completing it on their own.
In addition to the homework described above the student may need to complete other types of work at home. This may arise if the child has unfinished class work or if the child has make-up work.
